A pictorial record of how Mayo’s footballers with their young guns lit up the 2026 championship, upset the odds and captured the Sam Maguire Cup

Photographs by Sportsfile
Words by Mike Finnerty
Foreword by Mayo Manager Andy Moran

With 69:41 minutes on the clock Tommy Conroy finds himself at the end of a sweeping move on the Cusack Stand side of Croke Park and calmly flicks the ball over the bar – the last meaningful act in a pulsating All-Ireland final. Seconds later the hooter sounds and all’s changed, changed utterly, for the people of Mayo. The hurt of 75 barren years and 13 previous heartbreaking disappointments on football’s biggest day was washed away in an instant and a tidal wave of raw emotion unleashed. At long last Sam was heading west.

The Boys of Summer the Sportsfile team of photographers, in conjunction with writer Mike Finnerty and the Mayo players, retrace each step of the county’s greatest footballing odyssey, from a pre-season match on a raw January Saturday to the white heat of an All-Ireland final in July and finally to the warm glow of the multitudes who greeted their heroes in MacHale Park in Castlebar the following day.
