What is does ISO 216 mean?

The dimensions of the A series paper sizes are defined by the ISO 216 international paper size standard. ISO 216 is the international standard that defines paper sizes, based on a geometric progression with an aspect ratio of 1:√2 (approximately 1:1.414)

Put simply, any size in the A Series can be folded in half to create the next size down within the Series.

For example, folding or cutting an A4 sheet in half will create two A5 sheets. Folding or cutting the new A5 sheet in half will create two A6s and so on and so forth. In the A Series, the size taxonomy follows an ascending (increasing) number sequence as they go from larger sizes to smaller sizes.
