Description

The battle for Kilmallock consisted of ten days of intense fighting in the countryside around Kilmallock in County Limerick, in which the Irish Free State forces, advancing south from Limerick city, found their path blocked by anti-Treaty IRA troops, dug into the villages of Bruff,Bruree and Patrickswell. The battle was brought on by the fall of Limerick city to Free State forces earlier in the year. The fighting ended with the retreat of the anti-Treaty fighters, led by Liam Deasy, and the occupation of Kilmallock by Free State forces. In ‘The Battle for Kilmallock’, John O’Callaghan details the key strategies, characters, battles, chaos and bravery in the National Army’s attempt to break through tthe Republican position, which produced the only ‘line battle’ of the war with the two sides facing each other along clear front-lines.
